Dog boarding & daycare in Boston

Boston's published median boarding rate is $90 a night, the highest of any market currently indexable in the directory. Of the 27 listings under "dog boarding" and "dog daycare" in Boston, roughly a third are dog-walking or pet-sitting businesses that publish no vaccine, trial or proof requirement at all, and the market's tightest safety claim, Pawmenities' 1:3 staff-to-dog ratio, sits inside a home, not a kennel.

Boston is a small market by the index's own standard: 27 listings, 25 with a crawlable website, 24 reached and read in full. Of those 24, 21 published something the census could curate; the other three, Brookside Walk + Train, Bark by the Park and Tails, are a puppy-boarding-and-training business, a solo dog-walker, and a dead domain that redirect-loops and returned no page at all. A structural fact belongs up front: this metro's Google Places categories catch a lot of dog walkers and in-home pet sitters alongside true boarding and daycare facilities. Eastie Walks, LEASH Dog Care, Boston's Best Dog Walkers, Brookside and Boston Dog Butlers all appear, and most of them do offer an overnight product, in the sitter's own home or the client's, but none of them publish a vaccine list, a proof-of-records requirement or a temperament evaluation the way a facility-based boarding kennel does. That is a finding about the market's composition, not a gap in this crawl; a dog-walking company built around a smartphone app and a key lockbox has no reason to publish an admission policy.

Fourteen of the 21 curated facilities publish at least one admission requirement, and eleven of those fourteen publish a vaccine list: rabies, DHPP and bordetella required at all eleven, no exceptions found. Canine influenza is required by two, Neponset Pet Center & Animal Hospital and The Urban Hound, and mentioned nowhere else. Leptospirosis is required by none of the eleven, a genuine zero rather than a gap; Tampa, Orlando and Dallas each had at least a handful of facilities requiring or recommending it. Only two give a pre-arrival timing window for bordetella: Luxe Pet Resort's vaccination page says any lapsed or never-given vaccine "need[s] to be administered at least 10 days prior to your pet's stay," and The Urban Hound ties its whole vaccine list, including "six month bordatella," to "at least 7 days prior to boarding." Five require a negative fecal test, two of them (Neponset and Crate Escape's Puppy Social program) via a health screening rather than a temperament one.

Spay/neuter policy splits three ways among six facilities that address it. Pawmenities is the outlier and says so plainly: "Spay / neuter is not required. Intact dogs are welcome at any age." The Pooped Pooch Playground, Luxe (8 months) and The Urban Hound (6 months) require it outright for admission. Both Red Dog listings confine the requirement to group play at seven months, and bar unaltered dogs over fourteen months from daycare entirely. Eleven facilities, the single largest field in the market, address some form of trial or evaluation: seven require one outright (Harbor Hounds, Crate Escape, Pawmenities, The Pooped Pooch Playground, Boston Paws, Luxe, The Urban Hound), D'Tails Pet Boutique offers a four-hour trial for free, and Suite Escape and both Red Dog listings make it conditional, an evaluation only for a dog returning after a long break or headed for group play rather than solo Day Stay. Seven of 24 reached sites, 29 percent, say whether they verify vaccine records; Red Dog's chain policy page is explicit that "updated vaccine records must be received at least 48 hours prior to your pet's scheduled arrival date."

Six of 24 sites, 25 percent, say whether a person is on the premises overnight, a higher share than Dallas (13.7 percent of 97), Chicago (16.4 percent of 74) or Tampa (10.5 percent of 62), despite Boston being far smaller than any of the three. Five say yes. Pawmenities and Luxe are the plainest: "Our staff lives on-site at our private waterfront home" and "Our experienced staff is on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." Boston Paws goes further: "We even have sleep supervisors overnight," a sentence that only turned up on its Hotel pricing page, not the page the fact crawler originally reached. The Pooped Pooch Playground says "a trusted staff member stays on-site all night." The Urban Hound's yes is the softest of the five, a sentence about lobby hours rather than a direct answer. The market's only no is Harbor Hounds, and it is inferred rather than stated: its posted hours are "MONDAY-FRIDAY 7a-7p," the same pattern CURATION.md documents for every no found in this index so far, staffing hours, never a sentence that denies overnight coverage. Only two facilities publish a staff-to-dog ratio: Harbor Hounds' daycare says 1:10, and Pawmenities, the same home that gives the clearest overnight-staffing claim, says 1:3.

Ten of 27 listings, 37 percent, publish an overnight boarding rate, median $90, the highest published figure of any city currently indexable in the directory; only New York's $100 median, not yet indexable, is higher anywhere in the dataset, and Chicago's $80 is the current highest live market. The ten range from Eastie Walks' $65 (a dog walker's home-based overnight) to Suite Escape's $150 top suite and Boston's Best Dog Walkers' $150 Solo Boarding option; Luxe's three weight tiers run $75-$95, Boston Paws' three suite tiers run $85-$115 plus a holiday surcharge. Eight of 27, 30 percent, publish a daycare rate, median $49, above Dallas ($35) and roughly level with Chicago ($48). None of this is a quality verdict; a $150 solo overnight at a two-person dog-walking company and a $65 overnight in a shared home are different products, and the index measures what a website says, not what the stay is worth.

One structural note touches several of these numbers at once. Crate Escape and Suite Escape are, by Crate Escape's own history page, one business at one Charlestown address: "We opened Suite Escape, Boston's luxury dog hotel, in 2016. Located at our Charlestown facility, we provide the best care for your dog." They appear as two listings because they are two Google Places entries and two brands for two services, daycare under Crate Escape and overnight boarding under Suite Escape, and every figure above treats them as separate operators because that is how the index counts listings. Red Dog's two locations share one chain FAQ and policies page for all eleven of North Station's curated fields; Boston curates a twelfth, vetAccess, that North Station does not. The Doggy Port and its West Roxbury listing are the same site, and Boston's Best Dog Walkers appears twice from a www and non-www version of one domain. Four of the 21 curated facilities are effectively two operators wearing four listings.

Massachusetts sits in the index's Tier B, with a real qualifier. Every commercial boarding or training kennel in the Commonwealth needs a license under state law, Mass. General Laws c.140 sec.137A, and it cannot issue or renew until an animal control officer inspects the premises, at least once a year under sec.137C. That is a genuine, uniform, statewide requirement, not the county-by-county patchwork Florida runs. But the license itself is issued locally, by the city or town clerk everywhere in Massachusetts except Boston, where state law uniquely names the police commissioner as the licensing authority. Since Ollie's Law took effect in December 2024, municipalities must also report their licensed kennels to the state Department of Agricultural Resources every June, and MDAR must publish statewide minimum-care regulations for these kennels by June 2026; 237 of 351 municipalities reported 1,370 licensed kennels, 415 of them commercial boarding or training, by the first deadline in June 2025. None of that is a public, searchable list of who holds a Boston license, or whether any facility here currently holds one, and nothing in this record states or implies that any Boston facility is licensed, unlicensed, inspected or non-compliant.

None of this is a ranking. A facility that says nothing about overnight staffing may have someone there every night and simply never wrote it down; a facility with a published 1:3 ratio and one with none may care for dogs equally well. What this record measures is narrower: which of these facts a Boston pet owner can find on a website before they pick up the phone, and, for now, that is a smaller and pricier market than the bigger metros already live in this index.
